A few days ago, Inés Carbajal received the 6th Award for Professional Work for Fair Trade from the City Council of León. The award recognises her efforts in promoting the dissemination and commercialisation of the work carried out by the women of the KURTA project in India.
KURTA is an initiative that started in 2008. It forms part of an activity run by the Indian NGO SARPI (Society for the Advancement of the Rural People of India) which has been supported by the TA for more than 40 years in Honavar in the state of Karnataka.
The mayor of León, José Antonio Diez, highlighted the “commendable and remarkable work being done by Inés which reminds us of the unfairness of inequality and how we can all, with our purchasing decisions, contribute to a better world”.
Social economy
KURTA promotes the development, training and participation of women in society and the protection of family and children. It is a social economy project that focuses on production relations: promoting cooperation, social responsibility and ecological sustainability; and on consumer relations, through responsible consumption, trade in sustainable garments, knowing who makes them and under what working conditions, as Inés explained when she received the award.
In her speech, Inés Carbajal thanked the Teresian Association for having supported and promoted the creation and development of this initiative by providing human, cultural, intellectual and financial resources.
She also mentioned the León Chamber of Commerce Programme in which she herself was able to participate in 2014 by establishing connections with various entities and in which “this Fair Trade initiative was designed to make the project a solidarity business, an innovative social proposal and a scalable business model”.
