On 25 November, The InteRed Foundation, the Teresian Association's NGO, marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to recognise that violence against women is not an isolated phenomenon, but rather the consequence of structural inequalities that permeate our relationships, words and ways of looking at the world.
In a statement issued on 25 November, the NGO reaffirms its commitment to equality and to the option of living a life free from violence. "It is not enough to reject violence against women: we must transform the structures that perpetuate it and the learning that sustains it, starting with the way we communicate. At the InteRed Foundation, we believe that education and communication are ways to prevent violence and transform the culture that sustains it."
For this reason, this year's InteRed campaign has focused on non-violent communication, that is, a way of relating that encourages listening, understanding and expressing oneself with respect and empathy. Furthermore, they insist that one way to prevent gender-based violence is to transform the way we communicate.
In this regard, and in line with their commitment to educational action, they carry out various activities to promote:
- Integrating gender perspectives and intersections into their educational programmes.
- Developing methodologies that are participatory and critical, creating safe spaces free from violence in digital environments and social networks.
- Promoting intercultural dialogue from a critical perspective.
- Strengthening alliances with communities, educational institutions, and social actors.
- Giving visibility to the voices of those who have historically been silenced.
Actions against violence
InteRed works with educational communities, collectives, and organisations in more than 15 countries, supporting processes that strengthen affective education, co-education, violence prevention, and the building of healthy relationships.
They are committed to transformative education that encourages the active and committed participation of all people in favour of justice, gender equality, and social and environmental sustainability. "We began working for women's right to a life free of violence in 2007 with the Manuela Ramos Movement in Peru, with Synergie des Femmes pour les Victimes des Violences Sexuelles in North Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo; with the Centro Victoria Díez de Derechos Humanos in Mexico, the latter as part of the process of empowering and training women defenders to prevent violence. Work for women’s right to a life free of violence is also being done in Spain, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala and Bolivia."
