The TA youth group in the Democratic Republic of Congo (JITC) held a celebration in Kinshasa to mark the centenary of pontifical approval of the Teresian Association.
On Sunday 7 January 2024, the Teresian Association Youth in DR Congo celebrated the centenary of the pontifical approval of the Teresian Association with an event at the KARIBUNI Library in the Gombe district of Kinshasa.
The event opened with a thanksgiving Mass presided by Thomas Gethumbe, a Jesuit priest. The young people (JITC) provided animation with their songs, instruments and rhythm.
Personal stories
Boys and girls shared their personal accounts of what it means to be part of a JITC group. "We, the JITC youth, are aware that study is as important as prayer and that this effort always bears fruit. We must cultivate solidarity and fellowship among ourselves and with everybody else," they said.
The celebration continued with a meal together. Then the young people conducted some interviews with the members of the Teresian Association who were present, both from the primary association and ACIT. This was to get to know them better and to learn more about the mission of the TA in DR Congo.
The JITC youth also spoke about the social action activity carried out in December, when they went to play with children with cerebral palsy cared for by the Centre for Awakening, Stimulation, Education, Rehabilitation and Training (CESEREF). The initiative was part of the run-up activities to the centenary of pontifical approval.
On that occasion, the JITC youth brought food for the children and their parents. This presented an opportunity for them all to have fun together. Parents of the children with cerebral palsy appreciated this activity and encouraged them to do it again sometime.
A day to remember
The event marking the centenary of the pontifical approval brought together many guests, members and young people of the Teresian Association (JITC). All shared this time together in joy and fellowship. The programme included musical entertainment, personal stories and speeches of thanksgiving and encouragement.
The TA has been present in the DR Congo since 1964, and it has received recognition for its work in favour of peace, coexistence and work with young people.
This centenary celebration ended with the cutting of a birthday cake decorated with a candle symbolising the 100th anniversary of pontifical approval. The attendees left with the feeling of having experienced a day to remember.
