Pedro Poveda Special School is a ray of hope for cognitive and developmental challenged children. They have launched a campaign to appeal for financial support.

Friends Pedro Poveda Special School has been providing services to special children for the last 36 years with trained teachers and non-teaching staff.

In the current year 18 boys and girls are receiving education and training, 16 students are being given home based education by visiting their homes.

Students are fetched from home daily by the school bus and are taken back home in the evening.

Integration y self-care

Pedro Poveda Special School, which was started in the year 1986, caters to the integral development of the cognitive and developmental challenged children in and around Honavar and Kumta Taluk. The school was meant to deal with different types and levels of learning disability.

Over the years the program has been geared to help the children to learn skills to cope with the demands of daily life and to be integrated in the family and communities.

The main areas focused on the school are self-care, basic academic activities, pre-vocational skills, home economics, game time, physical training and yoga.

Students’ intelligence level is evaluated by a psychologist, and a monthly medical check-up is done.

The Pedro Poveda School is supported by various contributions and above all by donations; it does not receive any state subsidies. It is currently promoting a campaign to raise funds so that the school can continue with its goal of responding to the needs of the children. They have produced the attached video showing the day-to-day life of the school.

The TA is now in its 50th year of presence in India and this project with children who are normally relegated or hidden because they are different, is one of the reasons for hope and joy, a small light for the families they serve.
