This year TA Founder, the martyr-saint, Pedro Poveda celebrates his 151st birth anniversary. It is without doubt that everywhere TA members marked this significant date with a celebration.
The members of the Teresian Association in Bethlehem, held a Eucharistic celebration in thanksgiving, presided by Rev. Father Garrett Gundlach, SJ, a professor at Bethlehem University also in charge of the Lasallian Pastoral Ministry with youth. In his homily, Fr. Garrett spoke of Fr. Poveda’s deep love for the education and formation of the human person.
He pointed out that, even from his young age, Poveda seemed to be intentionally nurturing his special relationship with God –constantly mindful of the Lord’s presence and connectedness with Him in a simple and humble way. And because of this awareness, his union with God naturally flowed into the ordinary moments of his daily life. The priest further invited us to reflect as well: How do we cultivate that same attentiveness? How do we allow God’s Words and presence shape the way we speak, act, and relate to others each day?
In the example of Fr. Poveda, we are encouraged not only to admire his holiness, but to let it stir something within us —a renewed desire to grow, to be formed, and to be more conscious of God walking with us in the quiet and simple rhythm of life.
Teamwork
The celebration venue: Pontifical Mission Educational and Cultural Center, where both Monnitte Monana, Agnes and Mariam Sleibi, TA members, serve the community of Bethlehem. Teamwork was alive as we helped each other in the preparation of the liturgy, songs reflecting Advent and our love for the Blessed Mother. The choir was led by Monnitte and Agnes joined by her two sons Wadie and Wisam. The other group prepared the list of invitees and the refreshments to be served. We were few in number but dedication and commitment were our benchmark.
More than 30 friends and supporters came, also to live the spirit of Advent which we echoed in our invitation taking note of the peace and hope this season evoke, especially after months, weeks, days of turbulence. What could be a better reason to celebrate, not only TA Founder but the Prince of Peace, source of our hope and joy? Our guests represented different countries: Palestine, the United States, India, Philippines, Vietnam...
After the Mass, we offered a simple reception which transformed into a scenario of spirited exchange of news, a setting for renewing friendships and bonding among the Christians of Bethlehem, most of whom were connected like us, with the Christian Brothers at Bethlehem University.
