The Teresa Martin Co-educational School in Quetzaltenango (Guatemala) organised an eco-walk at the end of May and a reforestation day on El Baúl hill, under the slogan: Leave your mark and save the planet! The event was coordinated by the Department of Protected Areas and Environmental Education of the municipality of Quetzaltenango and saw the participation of teachers, students and parents.
The aim of this initiative was to raise public awareness among the population, as well as to promote and restore nearby natural environments. It also sought to consolidate a sense of shared responsibility and to enjoy the environment and family in interaction with others, fostering learning and a sense of belonging.
During the activity, 300 trees were planted and a workshop was given on the importance of protecting forests, ‘recognising them as subjects of law deserving of protection, care and value’, as encouraged by the lines of action of the Socio-Educational Proposal of the Teresian Association in America.
Some families described the experience as follows: ‘It was a very meaningful experience as a family and to be able to share as a school in a different space and with a very worthwhile activity.’
‘We got very tired, but it was something very beautiful for us and for our children, to be able to take them and for them to really feel that they are doing something for the planet.’
The school assures us that ‘by sharing the feelings of the families and the happiness for what has been achieved, we continue with our commitment as a family of the Teresa Martin Mixed School to make our educational work an opportunity that can transcend and transform’.
