On 11 January, the Teresian Association in Guatemala was delighted to join the universal TA celebration for one hundred years of Pontifical Approval.
Those 100 years of generosity and life commitment gave witness and attracted men and women to respond positively with trust and hope. They have all worked together in striving to fulfil Pedro Poveda's dream.
Our shared celebration was held in two locations with a Mass in Quetzaltenango and a prayer meeting in Guatemala City.
Something good
In Quetzaltenango the thanksgiving Mass took place in the Teresa Martin school. It was attended by administrative staff, support staff, teachers and some family members.
Symbols representing universality, diversity and light invited us to acknowledge our gratitude for this great enterprise that belongs to God, to appreciate it even more and to renew our sense of belonging and mission.
Transformative energy
For the community prayer in Guatemala City, the chosen symbol was a corn plant. This was to represent renewed commitment that can continue to serve and contribute both individually and collectively.
We expressed our gratitude for the dedication of the members of the Association in Guatemala. They have always believed in its power to transform, and they themselves became witnesses of life. We concluded the evening with a toast to the future fruits of this symbolic plant.
Since 1971
The Teresian Association has been present in Guatemala since 1971. It has about thirty members, many co-workers, and former students and friends. In addition to members working individually in professional and family life, there are two projects directly related to education.
The Xajana Kahalepana socio-educational project in Chinautla, Guatemala City, serves children and young people in an area with much poverty. It offers alternative educational resources and teacher training, among other activities.
The Teresa Martin co-educational school in Quetzaltenango has preparatory, primary, elementary and high school levels. It has a high percentage of Mayan and rural students who are helped to go further in their studies.
All that we experienced and celebrated on this anniversary of the pontifical approval, urged us to continue ensuring that the Teresian Association will carry on serving in faith and education, as leaven in the dough, to the building of the Kingdom of God in these places.
