On 3rd December 2024 with hearts full of joy and reverence, the 150th birth anniversary of St. Pedro Poveda, founder of the Teresian Association, was celebrated in the Library, uniting the vibrant inter-religious youth of Bethlehem University.
The celebration began with an engaging presentation by Elizabeth Dsouza, who vividly brought Fr. Poveda's life and mission to the forefront. From his transformative work with marginalized communities in Guadix to his visionary contributions to education and the founding of the Teresian Association, attendees were captivated by the enduring relevance of his values. For many, it was their first encounter with Fr. Poveda’s inspiring legacy, sparking meaningful reflections and lively discussions.
Unity amidst diversity
In a beautiful testament to the event’s inclusive spirit, Muslim students joined their Christian peers, underscoring the universal appeal of Fr. Poveda’s commitment to education and social transformation.
Agnes Sleibi led a short prayer, setting a reflective tone that encouraged spontaneous sharing from the group. Participants, moved by the occasion, shared their insights and personal connections to the values Fr. Poveda upheld, fostering a sense of unity amidst diversity.
The celebration concluded with gratitude and warm fellowship over snacks, leaving everyone inspired by a legacy that transcends boundaries, even in a region often shadowed by conflict and division. It was a day to remember –a vivid reminder that even in challenging times, unity and hope can light the way forward.
The gathering brought together 23 participants, including Christian students from diverse denominations and their Muslim peers –youth actively involved in Thursday activities led by Elizabeth Dsouza, the inter-religious group of Bethlehem University.

Islam Abueram, Qaiss Awad and Fatima Altous (Muslims) remarked that it was so beautiful to know Fr. Pedro Poveda and they were happy that they participated.
