On 30 March 2026, Pope Leo XIV appointed new members to the Dicastery for Integral Human Development, including Léocadie Wabo Lushombo, a Congolese theologian and member of the Teresian Association.
Léocadie Wabo Lushombo, from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, holds a PhD in Theology and is a Professor of Theological Ethics at the Jesuit School of Theology at Santa Clara University in Berkeley, United States, and has numerous publications on topics related to the mission of the Dicastery.
The five-year appointment means that Dr Wabo Lushombo will contribute to the study and reflection on the specific issues being addressed by the Dicastery. “To place at the service of the Church the many intersections of my fields of research in Theological Ethics, Economics and Sustainable Development, and my experiences working with women and with our small Christian communities in the Congo, as well as my involvement in the development of Hispanic Christian communities in California. I have been working with colleagues to provide training to Hispanic communities through our Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, California,” explained Léocadie.
The Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development devotes special attention to the promotion of justice, peace and care of creation in the light of the Gospel and the Social Teaching of the Church. This includes issues such as disarmament, human rights, human mobility – migrants and refugees – all people in situations of marginalisation, victims of conflicts or disasters, and all contemporary forms of slavery and torture, people whose dignity is at risk.
The members of the Dicasteries are chosen from among cardinals, bishops, men and women religious, and laypeople from around the world to ensure the universal participation of the Church.
