As part of the momentous celebration of the Teresian Association’s 100th Pontifical Approval, and Saint Pedro Poveda College’s 65th year, the whole staff, Teresian Association members, and guests, witnessed last August 7, 2024 at the Saint Pedro Poveda College, Quezon City, the launching of “An Extra-Ordinary Distinctiveness: Itineraries of Lay Spirituality in Pedro Poveda", a book edited by Dr. Elisa Estévez López and published by Narcea.
The event was graced by the presence of the book editor herself, Dr. Elisa Estévez López and the Narcea Director, Ms. Mónica González, alongside Ms. Rosalinda Y. Basas, College President of Saint Pedro Poveda College, Ms. Elsie Sebastian, of the International Translation Team of the TA, and Dr. Lucia Subaldo, Sector Director Teresian Association Philippines.
Ms. Sebastian introduced the two distinguished and esteemed speakers, Ms. Gonzalez and Dr. Estevez; Ms. Gonzalez gave a brief information about Narcea being the publishing house of the Teresian Association and its mission of sharing the Good News through the written word. Dr. Estevez highlighted the history of how this book came about and the significant contributions of several TA members. She elaborated on the title of the book, with these itineraries of lay spirituality pointing to one single idea: what makes a life extraordinarily distinctive is the holiness of life, the spiritual life, union with God. Dr. Estevez further enriched the understanding and appreciation of Father Poveda's pioneering idea on the role of the lay faithful, integrating Faith and Science in an increasingly secularized society.
Following the presentations were invaluable insights and experiences upon reading the book from Atty. Aurora Santiago, Former President of the Sangguniang Laiko ng Pilipinas, and Mr. Jacinto C. Gavino, Jr., DPA, Head of the Center for Family Ministries in the Philippines. Several participants from the audience also offered their take on the subject and shared their reflections and views. Afterwards, there was a symbolic handover of the book to some TA representatives and guests.
Grounded on Fr. Poveda’s Incarnation Spirituality, the book entailing eight (8) chapters is a culmination of a ten-year seminar filled with enriching discussions on lay spirituality among others in hopes of nourishing and inspiring lives committed to the Gospel, and the writings of Fr. Poveda.
Presenting the call to further appreciate, and contribute to the lay mission, the Church and povedan spirituality, the book celebrated the relevance of Fr. Poveda’s words in the context of the present world with challenges of conformity. The book caters to the need to quench the thirst for spirituality, to nourish their experience of God with an intent to be distinct in aspects that matter most.
Furthermore, the book highlights the importance of fostering love in building and maintaining communities, recognizing the strength in union, finding harmony and balance among one’s profession, life, faith and vocation.
Ultimately, the book truly encapsulates LEGADO, the theme of Saint Pedro Poveda College’ 65th Founding Anniversary in the best way possible, calling people to be witnesses of faith with an ever-present need to be persons for all.
