Josefa Segovia Foundation (JSF), Inc. honored as Champion of Indigenous Peoples’ Rights and Welfare in Mindanao (Philippines).
The National Commission on Indigenous Peoples Region XI, in partnership with the Mindanao Development Authority, organized the 3rd Davao Region IP Youth Conference, which took place from August 8-10, 2024, in Davao City, Philippines.
Approximately one hundred youth leaders of the Indigenous Cultural Communities from various parts of the Davao Region were present at the event.
Davao City IP Youth
On August 9th, which coincided with the celebration of the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, the Indigenous Peoples (IP) Youth presented their talents in an original music stage play. They extended invitations to various government, non-governmental, and private institutions, and organizations that advocate for the rights and welfare of IP youth. The event was named “Night of the Champions” and served as the occasion to present the Josefa Segovia Foundation, Inc. with a Seal of a Champion.
Support and dedication
The Indigenous Peoples of Davao Region selected JSF as a Champion due to its steadfast support and dedication in closely collaborating on various projects and programs, according to Atty. Geroncio R. Aguio, the regional director of the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP).
The NCIP is bestowing the award for the first time to other eleven government agencies, nongovernment organizations, and private institutions, such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), New Zealand International Development Cooperation and German Cooperation.
Dr. Josephine T. Estopil and Mrs. Carmelita A. Padernal, who hold the positions of executive director and governance officer, respectively, accepted the award on behalf of the Josefa Segovia Foundation, Inc. During her acceptance speech, Dr. Estopil emphasized that the distinction serves to strengthen their dedication to empowering Indigenous Peoples (IP) Youth for active citizenship, enabling them to create a positive impact in society. Additionally, she expressed gratitude for the fact that the IP communities view them not only as development partners, but also as friends of the IPs for development. She personally regards that the trust bestowed upon the foundation by the Indigenous Cultural Communities (ICCs) as their most prestigious and significant award to date.
