The Teresian School in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro held a special Mass in the school chapel to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the pontifical approval of the Teresian Association. Here is their report of the event.
On Saturday 8 June, the TA in Brazil had a special Mass to commemorate one hundred years since the Teresian Association was officially recognized by the Catholic Church in 1924. Our gathering included TA members, co-workers, families, friends and the beautiful choir of children and young people from the school. Their opening song was “You are the salt of the earth!” It was a time of togetherness and gratitude as we celebrated the legacy of St Pedro Poveda and all the people who were and are part of our history.
The Mass was presided by Rev. Anderson Pedroso SJ, rector of the Pontifical Catholic University (PUC-Rio) and concelebrated by Rev. Paulo de Oliveira Reis, chaplain of the Teresian School, and Rev. Francisco de Assis Alfenas and Rev. Medoro de Souza, friends of the Association.
The school principal, Glória do Nascimento, was the master of ceremonies. Several members of the TA delivered the readings. Marília Palhares proclaimed the first reading, with words that could be said to Pedro Poveda and the whole TA: “I have consecrated you and made you a prophet” (Jer 1:5).
Silvana and Guilherme Arduini with little Santiago, read the psalm “You are my hope, Lord” (Ps 71:5) making it resound with the whole assembly, and Lúcia Helena Saavedra reminded us that what counts is the “new creature” (Galatians 6:15). 
In his homily, Fr Anderson SJ stressed the importance of being salt and light in our world, and that the TA is called to be salt and light. He pointed to the deep bonds that exist between PUC-Rio and the Teresian School and the joy of celebrating this centenary together.
At the offertory, while we sang “Raise us up, the Association is safe and given to God, we will all go forward together", we presented the lives of those who went to Rome to ask for pontifical approval of the TA: Josefa Segovia, Isabel del Castillo and Eulalia Garcia.
We also gave thanks for the first members of the Teresian Association who came to Brazil: María Sonsoles Guerras, affectionately called Marisol, and Camino de Blas. They made it possible for Poveda’s “good idea” to bear fruit in this land of ours.
During the thanksgiving, Celia Resende, ACIT president, and Lúcia Pedrosa, PA delegate, expressed their gratitude and reminded us of the meaning of this celebration. Finally, Lurdes Figueiral, member of the TA General Council, spoke with affection and sensitivity of the many ties that unite the cultures and TA of Portugal and Brazil.
We ended with a delightful cocktail and a very special cake that had quotations from St Pedro Poveda. It was a joy to be able to count on the presence of Lurdes Figueiral who was here to accompany the ACIT Brazil Assembly.
For the past century, our social and educational work and our presence in the life of the Church have left lasting impressions for thousands of people. They bear witness to our commitment, as lay Christians, to “truly human” lives. We could all share this memory joyfully during this celebration, and we reaffirmed our commitment to continue in our efforts to transform society and to contribute to a synodal Church.

100 anos de aprovação da IT – Celebração Eucarística no Rio de Janeiro - Brasil
No sábado, dia 8 de junho, tivemos uma Eucaristia especial da IT-Brasil, para marcar este centenário tão significativo da Instituição Teresiana, oficialmente reconhecida pela Igreja Católica em 1924. Reunimos membros da IT, colaboradores, famílias, amigos e o lindo coral das crianças e jovens do colégio, que abriram a Eucaristia cantando “Vocês são o sal da terra!”. Foi um momento de união e gratidão, onde celebramos o legado de São Pedro Poveda e de todas as pessoas que fizeram e fazem parte da nossa história.
A Eucaristia foi presidida pelo Pe. Anderson Pedroso SJ, reitor da Pontifícia Universidade Católica (PUC-Rio) e concelebrada por Pe. Paulo de Oliveira Reis, capelão do Colégio Teresiano, Pe. Francisco de Assis Alfenas e Pe. Medoro de Souza, amigos da Instituição.
A diretora do Colégio, Glória do Nascimento, foi a mestra de cerimônias. As leituras foram lidas por membros da IT: Marília Palhares proclamou a primeira leitura, com as palavras que poderiam ser ditas a Pedro Poveda e toda a IT: “eu te consagrei e te fiz profeta” (Jer 1,5); o casal Silvana e Guilherme Arduini, com o pequeno Santiago, fizeram ressoar, com toda a assembleia, o Salmo “Tu és, Senhor, minha esperança” (Sl 71,5) e Lúcia Helena Saavedra nos lembrou que o que vale é a “nova criatura” (Gl 6,15).
Na homilia, o Pe. Anderson SJ ressaltou a importância de ser sal e luz em nosso mundo, que a IT está chamada a ser, lembrou o vínculo profundo que a PUC-Rio tem com o Colégio Teresiano e a alegria de celebrar juntos este centenário.
No ofertório, enquanto cantávamos “Eleva-nos Poveda, a Obra está segura e entregue a Deus, Poveda iremos juntos”, entregamos a vida daquelas que foram a Roma solicitar a aprovação pontifícia da IT: Josefa Segovia, Isabel del Castillo e Eulalia García.
Agradecemos também as primeiras da Instituição Teresiana que vieram para o Brasil: Maria Sonsoles Guerras, carinhosamente chamada de Marisol, e Camino de Blas, que propiciaram que a “ideia boa” de Poveda desse fruto nesta nossa terra.
Na ação de graças, Celia Resende, presidente ACIT e Lúcia Pedrosa, delegada da AP, agradeceram e lembraram o sentido da Eucaristia. Finalmente, Lurdes Figueiral, membro do Conselho de Governo da IT, nos fez sentir, com simpatia e sensibilidade, os muitos laços que unem as culturas e a IT de Portugal e do Brasil.
Finalizamos com um bonito coquetel de confraternização e um bolo muito especial, com frases de São Pedro Poveda. Foi uma alegria poder contar, na celebração, com a presença de Lurdes Figueiral, que veio acompanhar a Assembleia ACIT Brasil.
Ao longo de um século, nossa atuação socioeducativa e na vida da Igreja deixou marcas profundas em milhares de pessoas. Testemunham de forma viva nosso compromisso, como cristãos leigos e leigas, com as vidas “verdadeiramente humanas”. Pudemos compartilhar toda esta memória nesta celebração, com alegria e reafirmamos o compromisso de continuar nos esforçando para transformar a sociedade e contribuir para uma Igreja sinodal.
Parabéns à Instituição Teresiana pelos 100 anos de dedicação, amor e serviço. Que os próximos 100 sejam igualmente frutíferos e abençoados!
