From the Teresian School in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil they tell us about the first harvest from their hydroponic garden at the end of May.
Today was a special day! After six weeks of care and dedication, we had our first harvest. Our students were with us on this important occasion, harvesting and symbolically handing over the vegetables.
We were able to share the fruits of our labour with our families and co-workers at the Teresian School in Rio de Janeiro. These fresh vegetables included rocket, mizuna, Indian mustard leaf and smooth mustard. It was an incredible experience that strengthened our school community even more!
Two former students, Filipe and Mariana, are the ‘parents’ of the garden. Our hydroponic garden is making a difference for many families, the first hydroponic garden in a school in Rio de Janeiro. In addition to helping the children with their daily meals, the staff have their own portions and access to school meals, and donations are made to five community day care centres that the school supports.
The main idea is to put into practice the desire for sustainability. More than three hundred kilos of sustainable, tastier food will be produced; it will provide food security and contribute to human development; and it will involve the whole community in this project -- students, students' families, school staff, the community, the school's partner institutions—and it will benefit the environment with one hundred percent sustainable production. Food education takes place at school with healthy food without pesticides. It is of great benefit to everyone.
This space will also be used by the students to work on topics from several different disciplines, because in addition to consuming, they will learn while in the garden. It is an exciting achievement for the whole school community while promoting sustainability and environmental education.
Primeira colheita na nossa Horta Hidropônica!
Hoje foi um dia especial! Após seis semanas de cuidado e dedicação, celebramos a nossa primeira colheita. Nossos alunos estiveram conosco nesse momento importante, fazendo a colheita e entrega simbólica da nossa Horta.
Além disso, compartilhamos o resultado desse trabalho com nossas famílias e parceiros do Colégio Teresiano, levando hortaliças frescas como rúcula, couve mizuna, folha de mostarda nanquim e mostarda lisa! Uma experiência incrível que fortalece ainda mais nossa comunidade escolar!
Dois ex-alunos, Filipe e Mariana, são os “pais” da horta. Nossa Horta Hidropônica está fazendo a diferença para diversas famílias, a primeira horta hidropônica em um Colégio no Rio de Janeiro! Além de ajudar as crianças na sua alimentação do dia a dia, os funcionários tem as suas cestas, tem acesso nas refeições do Colégio e são feitas doações para cinco creches comunitárias que o Colégio ajuda.
A ideia principal é o propósito da sustentabilidade ser colocada em prática. Serão produzidos mais de trezentos quilos de alimento sustentável, mais saboroso, levando a segurança alimentar, contribuindo para o desenvolvimento humano e envolvendo toda a comunidade neste projeto, alunos, família dos alunos, funcionários do Colégio, a comunidade, as instituições parceiras do Colégio, sem falar do benefício ao meio ambiente com a produção cem por cento sustentável. A educação alimentar também se faz na escola, com alimentos saudáveis, sem agrotóxicos. Um benefício enorme para todos.
Este espaço também vai ser utilizado pelos alunos para trabalhar temáticas em várias disciplinas diferentes, porque além de consumir eles vão aprender dentro da Horta. Uma conquista emocionante para toda a comunidade escolar, promovendo sustentabilidade e educação ambiental.
