The Asturian Press Club, in Oviedo, hosted the conference “1924, from Asturias to the world. Memory of a singular trajectory” by Dr. Consuelo Flecha, last March. This event is part of the activities being held in Asturias to commemorate the centenary of the papal approval of the Teresian Association in Rome in 1924.
José Antonio Garmón, General Director of Innovation and Social Change, represented the Principality of Asturias and Concha del Palacio Duñabeitia, Professor and Secretary of the Faculty “Padre Ossó”, introduced the lecturer.
Consuelo Flecha, Doctor in Educational Sciences, Professor of History of Education in Seville, researcher in the field of the first women students in Spain’s universities, is Director of the Chair of TA History, one of whose current tasks is to carry out a research on “Women educators of the TA in society and history”.

Consuelo Flecha began by placing the beginning of the history of the Teresian Association in the context of an economically enterprising Asturian society, intellectually open to new ideas and with programs to spread culture outside academic circles. An environment that welcomed the proposals of Pedro Poveda with hope and generosity, represented in the opening of the Academy of Saint Teresa for Teacher Training in Oviedo.
She referred too to the fact that we are celebrating: the Pontifical recognition of the TA as International Association of the Laity. This papal support in 1924 opened a horizon of universality to the TA and favoured the departure to other countries.
She then described some of the features that characterized these Academies, a reflection of Poveda's pedagogy, in which Christian humanism and its dimension of social responsibility were essential axes of the personal development promoted.
An institutional reality today, with an impact in 28 countries, responding, in all cases, to the legacy of a charism and a mission that continues to offer to the society a valuable and necessary service.
The conference was illustrated with varied slides and at the end of it the speaker concluded with a strong request to the women to continue on the path that the first intrepid educators marked out.
