On 4 May 2024, the City Council of Jaen in Spain dedicated a plaque to St Pedro Poveda Castroverde on the street of the city that bears his name. This was to coincide with the anniversary of his canonization by John Paul II in 2003.
The inscription on the plaque reads: “St Pedro Poveda Castroverde (Linares 1874-Madrid 1936) priest and founder of the Teresian Association. Canonized on 4 May 2003. He was a canon in the Cathedral of Jaén from (1913-1921).”
The first part of the event took place in the adjacent square with speeches by the first deputy mayor, Manuel Carlos Vallejo, the councilor of culture, Maria Espejo, and the representative of the TA, Carmen Mora. They spoke of aspects of the life and work of St Pedro Poveda, his values and contributions to education, culture and the life of the people in Jaen, first through the Academy for student teachers founded in 1913 and today in the Pedro Poveda School.
Working families
The plaque was then installed. This was a gesture of recognition of the Teresian Association by the municipality in the centenary year of TA pontifical approval. The Municipal Band provided the music and María Ángeles Solís read a poem composed for the occasion.
The street in Jaén dedicated to Father Poveda, where the plaque has now been placed, is located in Peñamefécit. This is a social housing neighborhood built in the mid-twentieth century where working families, many of them migrants, live.
This Andalusian city is especially linked to the life of Poveda and to the history of the TA. This is where Josefa Segovia was born and got to know the Association and where the first diocesan approval of the Teresian Association was obtained in 1917.
