The 19th General Assembly of the Teresian Association opened on Tuesday 1 August in Santa María de los Negrales near Madrid, Spain.

The motto of the 19th General Assembly is People of the Teresian Association, arise: go forward as befits the charism you have received. This was also the motto of the International Meeting held from 21 to 28 July. The opening session began with a prayer calling on the Spirit and a reminder of Pedro Poveda's words: “If we live by the Spirit, then let us also move forward by the Spirit.”

The Centenary Assembly

TA President Maite Uribe began her opening address by reading a letter from the prefect of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life, Cardinal Kevin Farrell. He wrote that he was unable to join us at this Assembly because he was attending WYD which was taking place in Lisbon at the same time.

In her introduction, Uribe pointed out that the Assembly had just come from the International Meeting, a step on the path that was opened up “through the prophetic intuition of Pedro Poveda” who in 1923, when drafting the submission of the TA for approval by the Holy See, already described its diversity of members and cooperating associations.

“This new event, the 19th General Assembly, is so important for the whole Association, so let us bring to it the best of our experience of the International Meeting. It is up to us to act as a bridge, we who as members of the Primary Association have received a special call to maintain the unity and stability of the Teresian Association”, Maite Uribe told the 71 assembly participants quoting the Statutes of this private international association of the faithful.

This Assembly is being held in the half-year preceding the centenary of the pontifical approval of the Association, and Maite Uribe described it as something that “stimulates us and calls us to generosity, clear thinking, discernment and a great deal of trust”. The 19th Assembly, is the Centenary Assembly.

Among the objectives of this Assembly is the election of a new President and a new Governing Council. The Assembly concludes on 15 August.
