Argentina Henríquez, a TA member in the Dominican Republic who has been an educator for more than five decades, has received two awards in recognition of her work in education and empowerment of vulnerable communities.

In the Dominican Republic we continue to celebrate the centenary of the pontifical approval of the Teresian Association and to mark seventy years of presence in this fertile land. This has been a fruitful year with several awards being given to a number of TA members. On this occasion it is the turn of Argentina Henríquez, founder of the Centro Poveda Cultural Centre and the Pedro Higher Institute of Educational Studies. On 3 October she received the Julia Award and on 30 October she was given the ‘Women Who Change the World Award’ by the BHD Bank.
The Julia Prize was awarded for her contribution to education in the Dominican Republic and her role in the transformation of education in that country. The Women Who Change the World Award was given to her for the way in which she empowered vulnerable communities by promoting social justice and human development, encouraging critical thinking and democratic citizen values.

The award ceremony took place at the Gran Teatro del Cibao, in Santiago de Los Caballeros (Dominican Republic), with the participation of social and governmental institutions and the country’s vice president, Raquel Peña.
Loud applause accompanied the award winner for the courage she has shown in shining a light on the world with her life testimony. She is one of those women who strive every day for the cause of the common good; visionary women, great human beings, with strong values that break down barriers.
A woman who is committed
Argentina, a woman of commitment and courage, reminds us that true change is not achieved on the surface; it is born from deep within, where human nature draws its potential.
We thank the Lord for her life and vocation and the grace of these accolades. We celebrate and offer it in this centenary year and the seventieth anniversary of TA presence in the Dominican Republic.
