On 14 May, an InteRed event was held in Madrid to present a photo exhibition entitled Gente que vibra (People who vibrate) as part of the launch of ‘The Values That Unite Us’ campaign.
The campaign is intended to raise awareness among a greater number of people and to contribute to efforts to achieve equity, solidarity, justice, a culture of peace and environmental sustainability. These unite us as people so that we will take action and support projects such as those that the NGDO InteRed carries out in 15 countries. InteRed works with rural communities, indigenous populations, groups of girls and women, students with special educational needs, etc. It is active in the areas of education, training, human rights, prevention of gender violence and promoting participation, awareness and volunteering.
The event on the 14th in Madrid, attended by more than 200 people, consisted of an exhibition of images from Mauritania by photographer Quim Vives, who had travelled to this African country with InteRed, and two discussions moderated by journalist Fran Llorente. First, Belén Atienza, film producer and winner of the Goya Award for best film for “Society of the Snow” by J.A. Bayona, spoke with Ana Arancibia, director of InteRed, about the values that the film shows and that are similar to those experienced by vulnerable people in places where InteRed works. In the second discussion, Quim Vives spoke with Aitiziber Barrueta, a project technician from the NGDO who accompanied the photographer on his trip to Mauritania.
From cinema to life
Belén Atienza and Ana Arancibia spoke of how, in a world bereft of references, the film Society of the Snow shows how a group of people unite their abilities, efforts and energy to support each other for a common goal: life. These values are present in the NGDO's projects in various countries that are in situations of poverty or subjected to violence. They help people to move forward in their daily lives.
Quim Vives and Aitziber Barrueta related their experience of spending time with the people shown in the images. They are part of the project that InteRed is initiating in Mauritania. They are mainly women and girls and young people for whom access to education and other basic resources is a daily struggle. The authenticity and the vibrancy of life of these people made an impact on Quim. He undertakes his photographic work in a respectful way. He makes time for people and photgraphs their truth. Aitziber also highlighted the sensitivity and learning that this experience had given her.
When the discussions ended, the audience continued to talk about those topics. They could purchase copies of the photos, signed by the author and the proceeds were donated to InteRed.
Support and action for the TA Centenary
The Teresian Association gives its support to this InteRed campaign. The General Council addressed all individuals close to the TA who share these values and encouraged them to join the campaign as ambassadors and to help to broaden the base of associates of the NGDO. This can be a gesture of solidarity to mark the centenary of the pontifical approval of the TA.
