This year the Teresian Association is celebrating the centenary of its presence in Bilbao. This anniversary therefore coincides with the celebration of the one hundredth anniversary of the pontifical approval of the Association.

Concierto Solidario Centenario IT Bilbao 1

The opening of the Teresian Boarding Academy in Bilbao took place on 1 October 1924. Since then, there has been an uninterrupted TA educational presence in the region.

In addition to TA establishments and individual members’ activities, the Association ran the Diocesan Teacher-training College (between 1948 and 1973), which is currently attached to the University of Deusto (BAM), and two secondary schools in the 1970s: Rekaldeberri and Zurbaran.

Concierto Solidario Centenario IT Bilbao 2Today, the TA is present in Bilbao in the Ikasbide Ikastexea School and InteRed Euskal Herria Bilbao Committee, as well as with individual members working in various organisations.

Meanwhile, Mª Pilar Díaz Palacio, a PA member, and Mª Ángeles Esteban del Hierro, an ACIT member, are finalising a research project on the first stage of these one hundred years (1924-1936). They hope to publish a book that will be presented and distributed soon.

To carry out this work, they contacted María Jesús Cava Mesa, Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Deusto, a writer for the local press and known for her work on women's issues, and she agreed to collaborate. The initial coverage has therefore been reported in both the printed and digital press

Events

Several events are being held to celebrate this milestone. The first of these was part of Solidarity Week in the Ikasbide school (29 April-3 May), with the collaboration of InteRed. The Behotsik Orchestra gave a concert of works by Beethoven, Brahms and Bernstein in a programme entitled ‘The power of passion’. Other events are scheduled for the next academic year between October and December.

The programme and further information can be found on the TA Spain website.
