Two Spanish cities, León and Burgos, both located in Castilla - León, hosted two round tables on education as part of the series of events planned to celebrate the centenary of the pontifical approval of the Teresian Association last April.
León, challenges for education today
On 18 April, the Casa Botines Gaudí Museum hosted a round table discussion in León on the challenges of education in the 21st century. ‘Artificial Intelligence, Ecology and Care of the Planet and European and Global Citizenship’ were the three challenges addressed at this meeting, which was attended by around one hundred people.
Mª Dolores Peralta Ortiz, PhD in Education Sciences, moderated the round table, which was formed by José Alberto Benítez Andrades, professor at the School of Engineering of the University of León, Elena Marcos Porras, professor of Biodiversity and Environmental Management at the University of León, and Julia Mª González Ferreras, PhD in History and Geography from the University of Oxford (England) and member of Education for an Interdependent World (EDIW).
José Alberto Benítez underlined the importance of acquiring digital competences that allow the analysis and criteria for the best use of these tools, both for teachers and students.
For her part, Elena Marcos called for the development of knowledge processes, the development of skills and the improvement of attitudes, both individually and collectively, in order to achieve sustainable development.
Finally, Julia Mª González Ferreras expressed that it is essential to elaborate and develop projects with young people in order to achieve global citizenship.

Educate, accompany and transform
Educate-Accompany-Transform Today', is the theme of the educational encounter that was held in Burgos on 29 April to commemorate 100 years since the pontifical approval of the Teresian Association.
Lurdes Figueiral, member of the National Council of Education of Portugal between 2017 and 2021, and Antonio Roura, director of the journal Religión y Escuela, participated in the dialogue, which was attended by nearly 400 people. Mar Rubio of the TA acted as moderator and emcee.
The encounter highlighted how St. Pedro Poveda, founder of the Teresian Association, was able to respond to the challenges of his time in the world of education 100 years ago, and at the same time, how the Church, at this time, also asks those involved in education to analyse the challenges they face in order to put them in dialogue with the Gospel.
The challenges of education
During his intervention, Antonio Roura stressed the importance of originality in the educational approach, as well as the value of “being aware of the social responsibility of bringing the Christian perspective to these complex societies”.
For her part, Lurdes Figueiral, member of the Governing Council of the Teresian Association, made a brief retrospective of the role of this international association of lay people in the world of education and addressed the importance of embracing what has been lived during these 100 years, pointing out the features and keys of the Povedan education and pedagogy.
This event has raised awareness of the educational issue and its complexity in the society in which we live. In the same way, it has opened questions about how the school must be at this time to be meaningful and transformative.
The event concluded with a musical performance by the choir of the Colegio Santa María la Nueva y San José Artesano, of the Manjón-Palencia Diocesan Foundation.
