Professor Luisa Ruiz Higueras, a member of the Teresian Association in the ACIT Association of Eastern Andalusia, has received a new honor: a street in Jaén will bear her name.

The opening ceremony took place on July 14. First, José Luis Rodríguez, husband of the honoree, spoke on her behalf, as she was suffering from a throat condition.

After expressing gratitude to all those who made it possible for the teacher to be included in the street map of Jaén, he made the following statement: “It is a tribute that transcends the person, making her a living memory for those who walk there, even for those who did not know her.” He added that the family would like Luisa Ruiz Higueras to be remembered “as a woman from Jaén, intelligent, honest, hard-working, who dedicated her life to building a more educated and, above all, more just society.”

Example and vocation

The mayor of the city, Julio Millán, who also attended the ceremony, emphasized that the new street will bear the teacher's name, “also her example.” He added that it is “an act of justice, memory, and collective gratitude.”

He also highlighted Luisa's figure: “A woman who has marked the recent history of Jaén with her intelligence, her consistency in life, and her dedication to the most just causes.”

The vice-rector for Culture at the University of Jaén (UJA), Marta Torres, who was present at the ceremony, referred to her nationally and internationally recognized scientific work and highlighted her commitment and involvement, “a reflection of her vocation, as a teacher and someone who reached out to any colleague who needed it.”

She then referred to her work as a researcher in the field of gender studies. Specifically, she mentioned the UJA's “Women, Science, and SocietySeminar, which she created together with other professors and coordinated it.

The street named after Professor Luisa Ruiz Higueras will be located between La Alameda and Ronda Sur, at the intersection of Vicente Montuno Morente Street and Adarves Bajos Street.

Ties to the Teresian Association

Luisa Ruiz Higueras and her husband joined the Teresian Association more than forty years ago. Initially, they assumed the presidency of the Asociación de Matrimonios ACIT Jaén and later the presidency of the ACIT Federation of Spain. Luisa was the first president of the ACIT Eastern Andalusia Association and was also part of the Association's Council for Culture.
