The publishing house Narcea presented its new publication Educating Others and Oneself Between Screens at the Ministry of Youth and Children of the Government of Spain: All day with the mobile!, a publication that analyses the impact of technology on young people's lives and proposes educational keys to navigate the digital age.
The event was attended by Sira Rego, Minister of Youth and Children, the three authors of the book: Sara Serrate González, José Manuel Muñoz-Rodríguez and Agustín Huete, along with Mónica González, director of Narcea Ediciones.
During the presentation and subsequent discussion, attendees were able to learn first-hand about the results of the research that underpins the work, generating an enriching debate on the current challenges of education in digital environments, the role of the family and society in general.
At a time when digitalisation is an intrinsic part of our daily lives, this book offers an educational perspective on how to address the relationship between young people and screens. The work looks at the so-called "Generation T" or "Touch Generation": young people whose identity develops in part as an "onlife identity", where the boundaries between the virtual and the physical are constantly blurred.
The authors go beyond the merely instrumentalist vision of technology to understand it as a constitutive element of the young human being that influences how they act, think and build their identity. Far from falling into extreme positions, the authors adopt a middle ground: "neither as slaves of screens, nor oblivious to them, but as technological citizens". Faced with the tendency to observe the technological phenomenon only from the viewpoint of risk, Educating Others and Oneself Between Screens proposes keys to action based on "autonomy, responsibility, mediation and accompaniment, recognizing that technology is here to stay" and that it is not a matter of demonizing it, but of "taking it on, based on a feeling of belonging to the digital".
